Youth Ministry

Youth Ministry encompasses all ministry to those who are pre-teen and teens in our church and community. While youth ministry and youth group are often used interchangeably, youth ministry is more than the activities and programming provided for this age range. Youth Ministry includes the engagement of parents and other supportive adults as leaders and role models of faith. It includes congregational engagement and prioritization of young people in the overall church community. Youth Ministry provide opportunities for young people to lead and serve one another as they learn about current and future vocations.

Healthy, Christ-centered Youth Ministry helps young people to learn about their giftedness and provide opportunities to study God’s Word and theology in a new context as they age and grow in wisdom.  Congregations must take special care to know their young people and engage them wherever they are. Parents, pastors, commissioned ministers, church staff or volunteers all can contribute to supporting and engaging pre-teens and teens to help retain them in the church into adulthood.

Resources for Youth Ministry

After study and research, LCMS Youth Ministry has developed seven practices of healthy youth ministry. Any congregation can develop these healthy practices regardless of size, location, or resources. Parents, pastors, commissioned ministers, church staff or volunteers all can contribute to supporting and engaging teens during this critical time in their lives.

The seven practices of healthy youth ministry are

Congregations have…

•           Engaged parents

•           Supportive adults

•           Warmth, challenge, and grace

•           Opportunities to serve and lead

Congregations help each young person…

•           Deeply understand their baptismal faith

•           Develop a resilient identity in Christ

•           Life out their unique vocation

High School ministry can be a place where these practices meet the specific needs of teens today as they grow into their roles as servant leaders in the church and world.
