Teens/High School Ministry

High School Ministry engages and encourages teens from 9th to 12th grade as they study God’s Word, engage in the life of the Christian community and live out their vocations every day as a witness to the Gospel. Teens benefit when congregations provide targeted efforts to minister to and with this distinct population. High School Ministry also helps teens to connect and value their membership in the greater congregational community.

High School ministry can provide important support as teens move toward becoming independent adults. It also helps teens to develop relationships with other Christian peers and supportive adults who encourage their faith. In a busy world where teens have a lot of activities and choices, youth ministry often provides a safe place for young people to explore how their faith interacts with their lives and to ask difficult questions.

Resources for Teens/High School Ministry

After study and research, LCMS Youth Ministry has developed seven practices of healthy youth ministry. Any congregation can develop these healthy practices regardless of size, location, or resources. Parents, pastors, commissioned ministers, church staff or volunteers all can contribute to supporting and engaging teens during this critical time in their lives.

The seven practices of healthy youth ministry are

Congregations have…

•           Engaged parents

•           Supportive adults

•           Warmth, challenge, and grace

•           Opportunities to serve and lead

Congregations help each young person…

•           Deeply understand their baptismal faith

•           Develop a resilient identity in Christ

•           Life out their unique vocation

High School ministry can be a place where these practices meet the specific needs of teens today as they grow into their roles as servant leaders in the church and world.
