Opioid Abuse

Once thought to only be a problem for large cities, the opioid epidemic has affected almost every family in America in some form or fashion. According to the USDA, between 1999 and 2015, drug overdose deaths in rural counties jumped by 325 percent as compared to 198 percent in metropolitan areas.

LCMS Rural & Small-Town Mission hosted a free webinar titled “Opioid Abuse in Rural and Small-Town Settings” on June 18, 2020. The presenter was the Rev. Dr. Steven Schave, director of LCMS Urban & Inner-City Mission.

This webinar gives insight to a new approach of holistic mercy work in the church, which requires job readiness education and employment opportunities. This webinar provides an experience that equips pastors and lay leaders in caring for those who have fallen into addiction, ultimately recognizing that we are all beggars, standing in awe of God’s amazing grace through Christ.
